SUMMARY:In Situ Emergency Response Simulation Training and Human Factors F
 indings
DESCRIPTION:Molly Atkins and Kimberly Ostrowski (Froedtert Health)\n\nHuma
n Factors Engineering partnered with the Simulation Center to provide in s
itu training for several clinics within the region based on staff requests
for more in-depth Basic Life Support (BLS) education. Many clinic staff
in the ambulatory space felt they needed additional practice and support i
n this skillset because of the infrequency of occurrence, but high risk fo
r poor patient outcomes. The simulation and human factors team worked wit
h clinic leaders to assess current processes, education provided, typical
staffing on the unit, and equipment available to tailor the simulation sce
narios to each clinic. Simulations were run in several clinic environment
s to provide a baseline staff knowledge on emergency response process. A
survey was given to all staff who participated to gauge their confidence l
evel on the emergency response before and after each simulation. The simu
lation and human factors team identify gaps in the current state at each l
ocation and presented the findings to clinic leadership. Action items wer
e discussed with the larger group and implemented. Some interventions inc
luded changes in role definition as directed by frontline staff, adding/mo
ving/removing equipment in care areas, and addition of memory aids. Simul
ations were run again several weeks later to assess effectiveness of inter
ventions. The staff involved in each simulation indicated that these trai
nings were beneficial to their overall skills and confidence in BLS and we
re very engaged in the discussions of how to improve their processes. Bec
ause of the success seen in the first few in situ simulations, the Simulat
ion team is looking to run these trainings on a quarterly basis for contin
ued refreshers, expanding to many other clinic locations, and potentially
including other high-risk scenarios.\n\nTrack: Digital Health, Hospital En
