Mariana de Oliveira
Biography
Mariana is a PhD Fellow and Researcher at the University of Lisbon (Faculty of Sciences). With a Master and Bachelor degrees in Biomedical Engineering, her Doctoral research is focused on the Usability of AI as a Medical Device (AIaMD). Particularly, she's interested in the intersection between AI Transparency, Explainability, Trustworthiness and Risk Management/Mitigation. Her ongoing research focuses on developing novel usability frameworks for complex AIaMD diagnostic systems, addressing issues such as clinician trust in algorithmic outputs, cognitive workload during human-AI interaction, and strategies to mitigate automation bias in clinical decision-making.
Mariana has also co-led a digital therapeutics entrepreneurial venture, IMAGI Health, that combines Virtual Reality and relaxation exercises to develop immersive pain management tools for pediatric chronic pain patients. Mariana is passionate about evidence-based design and aims to establish clear principles that ensure the next generation of medical AI is not only powerful but also safe, transparent, and seamlessly integrated into the practice of medicine.
