Leigh V. Evans
Biography
Leigh V. Evans, MD is a Professor and Section Chief of Simulation in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Yale School of Medicine and Executive Director of the Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation (YCHS). She is an experienced educator receiving two Yale medical school teaching awards (the Bohmfalk Teaching Prize and the Alvin R. Feinstein Award). Twice, she has received the Outstanding Teaching in Emergency Medicine award presented by Emergency Medicine Resident Staff. In 2019, she was the recipient of the American College of Emergency Physician National Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award. Leigh has served as an academic mentor to multiple Yale medical students, emergency medicine residents, simulation fellows, and junior faculty in the section of simulation at the Yale School of Medicine. She has organized annual workshops from 2010-2024 for healthcare providers at the International Meeting of Simulation in Healthcare in the fields of procedural simulation in central venous catheter insertion, medical student simulation curriculum development, the use of medical ethics in simulation, resident milestone assessment, community outreach-based simulation, and physiologic measures of stress and anxiety. She has experience as a research investigator serving as the Principal Investigator (PI) on two NIH grants. She was the Principal Investigator on an AHRQ RO1 grant entitled “Improving patient and clinician safety during COVID-19 through a rapidly adaptive simulation intervention.” This work evaluated the use of simulation-based interventions to improve clinician stress and implement a simulation-based process improvement program incorporating user centered design and design thinking methodologies to improve COVID-19 care guidelines. She oversaw and participated in all components of the study including scenario design, revisions and execution, research plan implementation, and dissemination. She is currently the PI for an R25 Science Education Partnership Award for YCHS’s Yale Simulation Academy – an after-school outreach program designed to expose under-represented New Haven high school students to careers in STEM.
