Hanna J. Barton

Biography
Hanna J. Barton, PhD (they/them) is a Scientist in the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the founding Research Director of the Emergency Care Systems Laboratory. Dr. Barton is a human factors and health systems engineer with expertise in field research methods, health information technology evaluation, and human-centered design. Their research applies macroergonomics and systems engineering to design care systems that reliably deliver safe, equitable, and humane care. Their contributions include documenting the strategies caregivers develop to provide safe care in the home, developing practical methods for rapid evaluation of artificial intelligence–enabled clinical decision support, and advancing the field of community ergonomics—the application of human factors to reduce societal inequities. They received their Ph.D. and M.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering (Human Factors) and their B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, all from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
