Exploring the Impact of Healthcare Design on Adults with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities

DescriptionAccording to the National Institute of Child Health and Development, Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities (IDD’s) are defined as developmental differences that are usually present at birth and that uniquely affect the trajectory of the individual’s physical, intellectual, and/or emotional development. Moreover, the National Health Interview Survey mentions that during 2019-21, the prevalence of any diagnosed developmental disability in children aged 3–17 years increased from 7.40% to 8.56%. Due to complex medical needs, a lot of individuals with IDD frequently visit the Emergency department and other inpatient facilities (Williams et al., 2025). However, limited research has been conducted to understand how the design of healthcare spaces can be conducive to meeting their unique medical and psychological needs, while reducing adverse events within these settings. This exploratory review presents design-related findings from existing peer-reviewed articles, highlighting the urgent need for further research to improve the healthcare experiences of individuals with IDD.
