Family-Centered Care and Pediatric Health: Understanding Differences in Complex and Non-Complex Cases
SessionPoster Session 2
DescriptionChildren with medical complexity (CMC) represent a diverse group of pediatric patients who have significant chronic conditions or severe medical needs that require coordinated, multidisciplinary care across various healthcare settings. These children often face a combination of physical and developmental challenges, making their healthcare needs unique and multi-layered. CMC frequently experiences multiple hospitalizations, ongoing treatments, and specialized care interventions, requiring the involvement of various healthcare professionals, including pediatricians, specialists, and nurses.
This study explores the importance of family-centered care in the context of pediatric health, specifically examining the unique needs of CMC versus children with non-complex conditions. By analyzing how family-centered care approaches differ in complex and non-complex cases, we aim to highlight the significance of modifying healthcare delivery to meet the diverse needs of CMC and their families. Ultimately, this study emphasizes how a collaborative, family-driven approach to pediatric care can improve the overall experience for families, while addressing the challenges in managing complex pediatric cases.
We collected data from the 2022 National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH). The 2022 NSCH was conducted from July 2022 to January 2023. A total of 54,103 surveys were completed nationally by parents/caregivers of children and youth aged 0-17. NSCH questionnaires can be completed online or by mail. Households receive a mailed invitation asking an adult in the household who is familiar with the child’s health and health care (usually the parent) to complete a short screener questionnaire (via web or paper). The screener questionnaire asks participants to identify all children ages 0-17 living in the household. The NSCH is also designed to assess the prevalence and impact of special health care needs among children in the US and explores the extent to which children with special health care needs (CSHCN) have medical homes, access to needed services, and adequate care coordination. We examined the receiving family-centered care variable from parents' perspective for children with complex medical needs versus children with non-complex medical needs.
