Agentic Medicine in Deep Space Human Exploration: Autonomous Health Systems for the Moon and Mars
DescriptionFuture missions to the Moon, Mars, and other deep space destinations will require medical systems that can function effectively without continuous Earth-based oversight. Communication delays, limited crew medical expertise, constrained resources, and prolonged exposure to extreme environments present significant risks to astronaut health and performance. Traditional approaches to medical support are insufficient in these contexts, necessitating a paradigm shift toward autonomous, resilient, and adaptive health care models.

This presentation introduces and defines Agentic Medicine as the application of AI-enabled, autonomous medical agents designed to operate proactively within human spaceflight architectures. Agentic systems are not passive decision-support tools, but active agents capable of monitoring, diagnosing, intervening, and adapting to evolving physiological and operational states. By integrating with physiologic sensors, clinical baselines, and precision medicine frameworks, agentic medical systems deliver individualized and context-aware interventions at multiple levels—from preventive health optimization to acute incident response.

The presentation will review the operational requirements, design considerations, and human-systems integration challenges for implementing agentic medicine in deep space. Emphasis will be placed on how these systems can be embedded into spacesuits, vehicles, and habitats to provide seamless, scalable care. Technical considerations include real-time data fusion, adaptive decision logic, risk-aware autonomy, and maintaining trust and transparency between crew and autonomous systems.
